The Occupational English Test (OET)

What is the Occupational English Test (OET)?

The Occupational English Test (OET) is a globally recognized English language test designed specifically for the healthcare sector. It assesses the language proficiency of healthcare professionals who wish to study, work, or register in English-speaking environments. OET evaluates all four key skills—Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking. While Listening and Reading are common to all 12 healthcare professions, Writing and Speaking are profession-specific, ensuring that candidates are tested in contexts relevant to their field.

OET is accepted as proof of English proficiency in countries such as the UK, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, USA, Dubai, Namibia, and Singapore. It is owned by the Cambridge Boxhill Language Assessment Trust (CBLA), a joint venture between Cambridge English and Box Hill Institute.

Why should one prepare for the OET?

For healthcare professionals aspiring to migrate or practice abroad, English language competence is essential. OET ensures that candidates can communicate effectively in real clinical settings, bridging the linguistic gap in patient care, workplace communication, and medical documentation. Preparing for OET not only boosts your chances of achieving the required score but also builds confidence in handling day-to-day professional interactions.
